An Albuquerque Original Restaurant Earns Top Honor with Fresh Ingredients

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Burrito Express won the 2019 Breakfast Burrito Madness contest hosted by The Garrity Group Public Relations firm. This breakfast burrito competition was created to have a fun twist on the seasonal national collegiate basketball phenomenon by celebrating New Mexico culture and local small businesses.

“Breakfast burritos are a New Mexican staple,” said Andie Mirabal, Director of The Garrity Group. “This competition provided us with an opportunity to engage with our community and celebrate one of our state’s most popular breakfast items in a fun, yet relevant manner.”

Participants were chosen based on restaurants and fast casual spots frequented by The Garrity Group team and other local favorites for breakfast burritos.  Competitors were matched up based on similar styles of chile, breakfast potatoes and egg combinations.

The first two rounds of the bracket featured two breakfast burritos from each location – one with bacon and red chile, and one with bacon and green chile. The last two rounds featured two breakfast burritos with each chile option again, this time with sausage. The winning burrito from Burrito Express was a sausage and red chile breakfast burrito

“We started our restaurants about 35 years ago and we just continue to add fresh ingredients to all of our food and to always think of our community first and that’s what helps us be successful here,” said Martin Richardson, General Manager of Burrito Express.

After a tough first two rounds, the “final four” paired Burrito Express and Garcia’s Kitchen in one matchup and Twisters Burgers and Burritos versus New Mexico Beef Jerky.  Burrito Express moved to the next round after winning The Garrity Group team over with their potatoes and chile flavor, while New Mexico Beef Jerky advanced because of their homestyle cooking. In a fierce championship, Burrito Express came out on top because of the flavor of both their red and green chile.

The bracket featured 16 local restaurants in a head-to-head taste competition. The participants are:

  • Blake’s Lotaburger
  • Burrito Express
  • The Burrito Lady
  • Casa de Benavidez
  • Cecilia’s
  • Cervantes
  • Garcia’s Kitchen
  • Golden Pride
  • Hello Deli
  • Krazy Lizard
  • Little Anita’s
  • Millie’s
  • New Mexico Beef Jerky
  • Sadie’s
  • Twisters Burgers and Burritos
  • Tia Betty Blues

“This gave us a chance to expand our taste buds and waistbands while providing for a very unique team-building exercise,” says The Garrity Group President Tom Garrity. “On the topic of exercise, I am encouraging the team to get out and joy some beautiful weather and nice sidewalks in the Journal Center area to walk off some of the great calories we enjoyed over the past few weeks!
